“In redesigning and re-modelling the business, I was keen to explore ways to create a social consciousness within the brand identity. I have toyed for several years, with different business models that can positively contribute to many stakeholders, outside of the traditionally focused shareholder group. Although Capitalism has many flaws, it is currently the best system that we have, as long as we remove (if only in part) the Individual and re-integrate the Collective back into the system. By developing a business model that can both satisfy the traditional sales channels (the brick & mortar shops), local community groups, and a wider selection of causes and charities, Choose Food can accomplish more per dollar. Positively contributing more per dollar of revenue to a wider group of stakeholders gives me that ‘warm glow’ feeling. And that makes me happy.
Food should never have been dominated by a group of multinational firms, who get to dictate our food intake. Additionally, we know from the vast amount of business schools, business books and articles on the topic, most firms are inefficient in their operations, including and not limited to, the food industry and agribusinesses. So, who pays for that inefficiency? The consumer pays. Higher food prices for healthy food? Low food prices for unhealthy food. In any normal environment, does that make sense?
Regardless of infinite economic growth formulae trying to state the opposite, Planet Earth is a finite resource. We only have one planet. And yes, many visionary billionaires are attempting to explore space for viable alternatives, but right now, we only have one planet. One planet that will have 10 billion people to feed by 2050. Choose Food Limited will never solve all issues, but in a small way, in a small country that is far from most of the other human inhabitants, we can start to make a bit of a difference. Massive change can only happen in small bite-sized chunks, in a repetitive and exponentially growing manner.
Choose Food is more than dietary choice, although that is important. Choose Food is more than a few feel good “free from…” stickers on a product, although they have their place. Choose Food is more than simple platitudes about ethical food, food morality, or food security, although these issues are of course, vital to discuss openly. Choose Food is more than a sales channel for local community groups to fund raise for things relevant to them, although this grass-roots action is important. Choose Food Ltd is all these things.
Choose Food Ltd is an idea. It is not just my idea, I don’t know enough. It is a collaboration of different people, in different groups, sharing their thoughts about food, sharing their recipes, sharing their love of all the different aspects of food. Why, because let’s face it, without food we’d be dead, and where’s the fun in that?” Food has always been a shared experience, from the gathering, the hunting the cooking and the consuming – it has always been a multitude of experiences. In the collective experience of all parts of food, food choice and Choose Food has its own small place in the world.
Thank you for your ideas, ideals and support”
